为available和useful区别了激励广大青少年学生树立正确available和useful区别的世界观和人生观，培养具有中国文化血统以及国际文化视野的跨文化交流的多元化人才，展现当代青少年学生积极向上的精神风貌，选拔活动以“ 中国文化世界表达”为主题，旨在进一步增强学生中国文化精神的主体意识，促进中国优秀传统文化的传承与传播，扩大中国文化的世界影响，着力塑造具备全方面核心素养的优秀国际化人才。自2010年开赛以来，吸引了来自北京、四川、浙江、陕西、青海、贵州、山东、安徽、 河南、甘肃、江苏等近二十个省级赛区以及香港特别行政区推选出来的优秀选手。

1. Kitty Likes Candy
Kitty is hungry. “Here is some fish, Kitty.” her owner says. But Kitty does not want fish. “Here is some beef, Kitty.” the owner says. But Kitty does not want beef. “What do you want, Kitty?” the owners asks. Kitty wants candy. “You cannot have candy, Kitty. Candy is not good for cats.” Kitty does not listen to her owner. She eats a lot of candies. But she has to brush her teeth. Kitty, how does the toothpaste taste?
2. The Wishing Tree
A monkey built a home in a tree. One day, it can’t find his jeans. So he throws all the things out of his home. A table flies out of the tree, then a chair and some cups. After a while, a bird passes by (路过). It says: “What bad weather! I want a sunhat (太阳帽).” Then, a lampshade (灯罩) falls down on its head. “A sunhat! This must be a wishing tree!” It leaves happily. Now the guy in the tree loses another thing.
3. Hole for a Fish
Today, the weather is good. Mr. Jones walks around his garden. He sees little Tom. Tom is filling a hole with dirt. He doesn’t look happy. “What are you doing there, Tom?” Mr. Jones asks.
“My goldfish died,” little Tom says.
He is very sad.
“I just buried him.”
“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that,” Mr. Jones says. “But the hole is too big for a goldfish, isn’t it?” little Tom puts down the dirt, and says: “That’s because he’s inside the stomach of your cat.”
4. I Have More Legs
An ant, a spider and a centipede are having a party. The ant wants to buy some beer.
The centipede says: “Let me do it. It will take too long for you. I have a lot more legs than you. I can do it faster!” Ten minutes pass, 20 minutes, and then 30minutes.
“What’s taking him so long?” the spider asks. The ant wants to find the centipede. He opens the front door and sees the centipede outside.
The ant asks: “Hey, why are you so slow?”
“I’m still putting on my shoes,” answers the centipede.
5. Scary Plant
It’s a sunny day. My class takes a field trip. We follow our teacher to go through a dense forest. But then I see some horrible plants. It is as tall as a house. I go close to one of them and hear a loudly voice: “Food!” I shout. The plant swallows my hamburger! Still hungry, it reaches out with some leaves. I start to ask for help. Again, it pulls out a pencil from my schoolbag and eats it. Now, I call the plant Scary flower!
6. Where is My Coffee Pot?
Jim works on a small ship. One morning, he breaks the captain’s coffee pot. He throws the pieces into the sea.
The captain asks angrily: “Where is my coffee pot? If somebody has lost my pot, I will fire him!”
“Is something ‘lost’ if you know where it is?” asks Jim.
“Of course not,” says the captain.
“Then your coffee pot isn’t lost, sir, because I know where it is,” says Jim with a smile.
“Where is it?” asks the captain.
“At the bottom of the sea,” says Jim.
7. Great Peanut
Peanuty is a peanut. He wants to be a useful peanut, He comes to the farm. There live a rabbit and her owner Daisy. He jumps into the cage. An earthquake (地震) happens. Daisy and the rabbit cage fall down. Peanuty jumps out of the broken cage. He wakes up Daisy and the rabbit. After a few days, Daisy is hungry. But there is no food. Peanuty feels sad. “But you want to be a useful peanut.” says Daisy. “I can save people. Isn’t that useful?” says Peanuty. Daisy eats the peanut. Daisy grows up. She becomes famous and knows lots of heroes. But the only hero in her heart is Peanuty.
8. Elephant Loves Hugs
A baby elephant becomes a star at a farm in Thailand because he loves to hug (拥抱) people! His name is Nampuu. He climbs on top of visitors and falls between their arms. Sometimes he even wraps (缠绕) his trunk (象鼻) around their heads. Nampuu is smaller than other baby elephants. So he doesn’t hurt (伤害) the visitors.
9. Tree Houses
You live in a house, but what about a tree house? In the US, many homes have yards with trees. Families sometimes build a small house in a big tree. These houses aren’t for living. Kids play in them. There is often a ladder. Kids can climb up it and go into the tree house. It can be very simple and fancy. But it must be safe. Kids will play games in the tree house and have fun with friends.
10. My Best Friend
Nancy is my best friend. We’re in the same class. We share everything with each other. She loves playing the Gu Zheng and dancing. She’s good at Latin dance. She often plays computer games and goes shopping on weekend. We are very happy when we are together. She is my best friend forever.

1. The Missing Part
Kim and Bob have a broken machine. It took a few days for them to fix it. They get in the machine (机器) and touch the steering wheel.
"Let's drive it!" Kim says.
Just then, Lucy comes. She picks up a build nut from the ground.
"You need this. It is a part of the machine."
"No, it is a spare (多余的) part," says Bob. Then, they drive away. But two minutes later, the machine stops and can't move.
"Maybe we need the spare part."
"Look, that's Lucy! She is riding a flying bike and brings us the missing part."
2. A Funny Story
Barbara likes funny stories. She likes to hear funny stories and tell funny stories. She told her mom a funny story. When she finished, she waited for her mom to laugh. "Mom, why aren't you laughing? That was a funny story," Barbara said. "Oh, I'm sorry," her mom said, "Sometimes you think something is funny, but someone else may not think so." So, Barbara's mom did not laugh at Barbara's story. Barbara told the same story to her younger sister. Her younger sister laughed.
3. Crazy Inventor
I am going to be rich! I invent the first electric (电的) machine dancer. I use an old TV shell from father's toolbox (工具箱). I turn it on, and it works well. I can't believe it! "Great!" I look up and down. I can't wait to sell it for one thousand yuan. Then I will live like wealthy man.
I invite my grandfather to have a look. But when I turn it on, the machine (机器) begins to shake. My grandfather quickly runs out of my lab.
4. A Shot in the Arm
Lucy went to the doctor. She didn't feel good.
The doctor asked, "What's the problem? What's the matter?" She said she didn't feel right. "Do you hurt? Where do you feel hurt?" the doctor asked. She said that she hurt all over. She hurt everywhere. She hurt all over her body. The doctor said, "You have a big problem. I will fix your problem." The doctor gave Lucy a shot. He gave her a shot in her left arm. "Do you feel better now?" he asked her. "No," she said, "now my left arm hurts a lot."
5. Carrot Cake
Edie's birthday was today. "I want nothing for my birthday," she said. Nick knew better. He knew that "nothing" meant "something." He went to the bakery（面包房） in the morning. He looked at the cakes. She liked cake without icing（酥皮）. He looked for a cake without icing. He didn't see one. But he did see a carrot cake. The cake had vanilla（香草） icing. He liked vanilla icing. She liked carrot cake. He bought the cake. The baker wrote "Happy Birthday Edie" on the cake. She'll like this cake, Nick thought. He took it home. He showed Edie the cake. "It looks delicious," she said, "But you have to eat all the icing. Did you buy this cake for me or for you? I know you love icing. You know I don't like icing. Next year buy me a cake without icing. You have a whole year to find one."
6. I'll Call You at 7:00
Carol and Mary are friends. Carol said she would call Mary at 7 o'clock. Carol didn't call at 7:00. She didn't call at 7:15. She finally called at 7:30. She apologized（道歉） for calling so late. Mary said it was OK. But it wasn't OK. Mary didn't like people to lie. This wasn't the first time Carol had lied. This was the fourth time Carol had lied. Mary did not trust Carol. Carol would never be her best friend. A best friend tells the truth. A best friend doesn't lie. A best friend does not call late. A best friend does not arrive late. A best friend is always on time.
7. Brown Mouse Gets Some Corn
Brown Mouse looked out the window. "I can see some corn in the garden," he said. "I like eating corn," said White Mouse. "Let's go and get some!" said Gray Mouse. "But we can't," said White Mouse. "The cat is outside. He will get us."
"Look!" said Brown Mouse. "The dog is asleep down here. We can wake him up, and then he will run after the cat. Let's go!"
"Come on!" said Brown Mouse. The little mice jumped up and down on the dog's tail. The dog woke up.
Then, the dog saw the cat. "Grrr!" he said, and the cat ran away. The dog ran after it. "Now we can go and get the corn!" said Brown Mouse. The mice ran to the garden and came back with some corn. "We love eating corn!" said the three little mice.
8. Old Story of the Order
The Jade Emperor wants to choose some animal guards. He will choose the first 12 animals to arrive. The cat tells the rat to wake it up. But the rat forgets to. So the cat is out and hates rats very much. The rat meets the ox. So it lets the ox carry him. The ox arrives first. But the rat slid in front of the ox. So the rat wins first place. The tiger and dragon don't agree. So the emperor put them behind the ox. But the rabbit is not happy and wants to race the dragon. The rabbit wins and is in front of the dragon. The dog thinks it's not fair and bites the rabbit. So the emperor punishes it and puts it in second to last. The pig is so lazy and it is the last.
9. Monkey "Prince" Becomes "King"
Long ago, some people went out to sea on their ship. One of them took his pet monkey with him.When they were far out at sea, a terrible storm came and everyone fell into the water. The monkey thought he would drown. Suddenly a dolphin showed up and picked him up. They soon made it to an island, and the monkey got off the dolphin's back.
"Do you know this place?" the dolphin asked.
"Yes, I do. In fact, the king of the island is my best friend. Do you know that I am a prince of another island?" the monkey said.But the dolphin knew that no one lived on the island, so he said: "Well, well, so you are a prince! Now, you can be the king!"
"How can I be the king?" the monkey asked.
As the dolphin started swimming away, he answered: "That's easy. You are the only one on this island!"
10. The Chatterbox Turtle
Turtle lived in a muddy pool. Many animals came to the pool to drink. Turtle loved to talk to them. "Turtle is a big chatterbox," they said.
One day, Turtle saw two geese.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
"We are on our way home," said the geese, "we live far away on a beautiful blue lake."
"I wish I could go there," Turtle said.
"Why don't you fly back with us?" asked the geese.
"I can't fly," Turtle said.
"We'll carry you to the lake," said the geese, "but you must not talk until we get home."
Then the geese found a long stick and held it in their beaks.
"Hold onto this with your mouth," they said, "you must not talk. Not a word! or you will fall."
Two geese would take Turtle to the lake. Why couldn't Turtle talk?
